Tutorial for beginners with Front Page WordPress

Your WordPress home page (also known as the home page) is the first thing most visitors will see when they visit your site. As such, it is very important to make a good first impression.

Although your front page will usually display your latest posts, you may want something more customized to help your most important content stand out. Fortunately, there are many options available on the WordPress platform.

What is Front Page (and why you might need it)

Your first page is the home page of your WordPress site. By default, it displays your blog posts, starting with the most recent entries. WordPress allows you to set the number of posts to be displayed and even include teasers for other posts (depending on your theme preferences).

Fortunately, WordPress allows you to select any page to use as your previous page. This means you can use static or custom pages. The second option is particularly interesting because it allows you to stand out from other sites that use the same topic.

The benefits of a custom front page include the ability to:

  • Optimize your static content.
  • Show better what your site is about - its mission, distinguishing features, core values, etc.
  • More powerful calls to action (CTAs) are easy to see.

Customizing your WordPress front page allows you to tweak the interface so that it meets your requirements. It can also give you an important advantage compared to other websites with similar themes. Let's take a look at a few ways to customize your previous page in WordPress.

3 ways to customize your Front Page WordPress

Before performing any of these methods, it is important to first back up your site. This will ensure that you can easily roll back the changes you don't like.

#first. Choose to display posts or static pages

You have two main options for your WordPress front page. To view them, go to your control panel and select Settings> Reading.

Here, you can choose to display your latest posts on the previous page or turn it into a static page. If your blog is the main focus of your website, showing the most recent posts may be your priority. You can set the number of posts to display by changing the number in the Blog pages displayed in most fields.

If you choose a static page instead, you can decide which page to use.

You can also choose an alternate page that will display your blog posts. Remember that you will need to create these pages before you can select them to display.

#2. Customize your static front page using shortcodes

Basically, shortcode is a code dedicated to WordPress that allows you to perform a specific action quickly. For example, you can use shortcodes to add features or embed files in a page (such as videos or maps).

You can use shortcodes for many things, one is to customize your WordPress front page. First, you'll want to make sure you have a specific page set as your static homepage (as detailed above). Then open that page and switch to the Text editor.

Just copy and paste the shortcode you want to add to the editor. For example, you can use a shortcode (gallery) to turn your previous page into a photo gallery or a short code to showcase your site with a customized video. If you return to the Visual tab, you'll see a new space for you to customize the functionality added by the shortcode:

In this example, you'll click the edit icon and add your video to the page. Then save or update it, and you're done! Your shortcode should work accordingly. WordPress provides a number of default shortcode options for you to get started and you may have more access depending on your theme and plugin.

# 3. Create a custom WordPress site template

You can also customize your previous page in WordPress by creating custom page templates. Start by opening a simple text editor like Notepad (you can also use any HTML editor, such as Atom). After this, write your first PHP line:

MyCustomTemplate is a placeholder and you can rename it to whatever you want the custom template to be called (just make sure there are no spaces). Save the file, make sure to add the .php extension at the end.

You have just created your first custom WordPress template! Please upload and edit it. For this you will need an FTP client. We recommend FileZilla. Use it to connect to your server and find your / wp-content / Themes folder. Find the folder in your current theme and paste or drag your new template into it.

Next, log into your WordPress dashboard and select Page> Add new. On the right side of your screen, you will see the Page Properties area.

You should see your new template in the Template drop-down menu. Select it and when you publish (or update) the page, your custom template will be applied.

Conclusion

Adding a custom front page to your website has a lot of benefits, including a more intuitive appeal and the ability to convey relevant information to visitors right away. Fortunately, WordPress is flexible enough to allow you to customize your previous page in almost every way you need.
