How to add videos to WordPress

Do you find it easy to add videos to your WordPress site? If you scream YES, you won't be here, right now?

Another related question: Is it easy to create or find the best videos for your WordPress site? That's right, I didn't think so. You may not even know where to start, but don't sweat; you're not alone.

At the outset, adding videos to your WordPress posts and pages may seem scary at first, but nothing could be further from the truth. Turns out you can add videos to your WordPress site like a pro, and in this post, we show you exactly how. Prepare your cup and set the mood with some video statistics.

Some video statistics

With video being such a hassle, why first have to add videos to your site? I mean, you would think high-quality text and image content is enough, right?

After all, you've heard experts praise that you can optimize images and text for SEO and score top spots in search engines. Was there and doing that, so I can assure you it works. Nothing new there.

So, why should you put videos in your WordPress marketing arsenal? The following statistics will help you make informed decisions.

  • People watch over 5 billion YouTube videos every day
  • Users watch over 100 million hours of video on Facebook every day
  • 82% of Twitter users watch videos on the platform
  • The average internet user spends 88% more time on a website with video
  • 70% of marketing experts are actively optimizing videos for SEO
  • 43% of good marketers agree they will create more video content if there are no obstacles such as budget, resources and time.
  • 65% of viewers watch over 3/4 of the video
  • 9 out of 10 viewers said product videos were useful in decision making
  • Adding videos to email marketing will increase your clickthrough rate by 300%
  • Including videos on landing pages can increase conversion rates by 80%
  • 64% of buyers are more likely to purchase a product on your website after watching a video

Clearly, the statistics above paint a great picture of the future of video marketing. The data also shows that there has never been a better time to incorporate video into your website marketing strategy. And if statistics don't mean stimulating you, perhaps the following benefit list will seal the deal.

Benefits of Video Marketing

If you're not the type to goofy, stats will be hard to move you. To combat this, here is a quick list of the benefits you will get when you include videos in your marketing strategy.

The video may:

  • Increase brand awareness ten times. A prime example of how you can use video to increase brand awareness is Dollar Shave Club's YouTube video, which prompted 12,000 orders within two days. Four years later, Unilever bought Dollar Shave Club for $ 1 billion in cash. To speak wh-aa-at ?
  • Help you reach more users. YouTube and many social media sites actively promote video content, allowing you to reach more users. Videos can help you build a beneficial target audience for your business website now and in the future.
  • Provide clearer product or service demos, resulting in more purchases
  • Improve your search rankings, because you are likely to rank more than 50 times on the first page of Google if you add optimized videos to your site.
  • Gives you better return on investment (ROI)
  • Build connections with emotions and beliefs, because videos have innate ability to spark emotions as long as you do your work
  • Leads to many conversions
  • Adding the rest of the content allows you to provide a rich user experience on your WordPress site

Without a doubt, video will only continue to grow in effectiveness and penetration as a marketing medium. That said, it's important to focus on the latest video trends to stay ahead of the competition, which - unfortunately - is rigid.

Where does all this leave you? Still deadlocked, right?

The first step in leveraging the power of video is learning how to add videos to your WordPress site. How else would you enjoy the benefits of WordPress videos if you couldn't add them to your site?

Read on to discover how you can easily add videos to your WordPress site without spending a penny on developers or plugins.

How to add videos to WordPress manually

You do not need a plugin to add videos to your WordPress site. WordPress, as its great platform, comes with convenient video integration features that make the whole process as easy as A, B, and C.

To the point of Freddy, Okay, I hear you

Assuming you've uploaded your video to YouTube (or perhaps you're sharing videos from other creators), navigate to the video you want to add to your WordPress site.

Copy the link in the browser address bar as below.

Alternatively, you can right click the video and click Copy Video URL when we highlight in the screenshot below.

How to add videos to wordpress copy the video url on youtube videos

Now, you have a link that looks like this:

Next, navigate to the page or post where you want to add the video. If you are creating a new page, simply navigate to Page> Add new on your WordPress admin menu as shown below.

Add a new page in wordpress admin

Note: If you are adding videos to a post, you need to navigate to Posts> Add new in the step above.

When the page editor loads, add the regular content, i.e. page title, content, tags, categories, SEO, etc. We have filled our editor with fake content as shown below. Also note that I am using the Gutenberg editor.

How to add videos to your wordpress site

There are two ways you can add videos to your site within the Gutenberg editor. You can inline video or use Gutenberg's video block.

1. Add inline videos to WordPress

To add inline videos to your page, simply paste the YouTube URL you copied earlier into a line of your own (press the ENTER key before pasting the URL) as we show below.

A few notes about the image above (the numbers correspond to the numbered list below). You can:

  1. don't see the link we just pasted because WordPress converts the link into an instant video preview
  2. align videos, edit YouTube URLs, copy videos and even delete videos among Gutenberg's other specific actions
  3. Easy to add captions here
  4. Choose to watch video resized for smaller devices. We recommend leaving this setting ON
  5. class definition CSS additional, which means you can customize your video container styles, but you'll need to learn CSS first, so forget that area for now.

With everything ready, please press the Preview button at the top to see your new YouTube videos embedded in action. This is my interface with the Twenty Seventeen WordPress theme.

Add videos to wordpress

And if you're using the Classic Editor, your page should look like this:

Add videos to WordPress in Classic Editor

As you can see the URL automatically fills in the link based video - in this case, YouTube video. With Classic Editor, there really isn't any option to edit video size or align - that's what it is.

That is easy, right? You do not even sweat.

2. Add videos to WordPress using the Gutenberg block

Adding a video using a Gutenberg block is also easy. With your copied YouTube URL in hand, place your cursor where you want your video to be placed and click the full plus sign (+) as shown below.

Add videos to wordpress via gutenberg block

On the panel that opens, navigate to the Common Block and click on the Video block as we emphasize below.

Video block in gutenberg editor

Next, click the Insert button from the URL as we detailed in the video below.

Add videos to wordpress by inserting the word url option

Next, paste your YouTube video URL and click the Apply button to add the video to your WordPress site. See image below.

And this is what you get.

Is there any more attention? You may recognize the Bold button, Italicize and Link at the end of the video preview? What do you think these buttons do?

Create the rest of your page and click the Publish button to publish the page / post on your WordPress site.

The point is that adding videos to your WordPress site is an easy tool. The methods above support a large number of video streaming sites, meaning you have the right options to meet all your needs.

Here are a few supported video sites:

  • YouTube
  • Vimeo
  • Facebook
  • Flickr
  • Hulu
  • Instagram
  • Cartoon
  • DailyMotion
  • ...

Still curious? You can learn more about supported video sites and how to add videos from these sites in WordPress Codex .

3. How to add videos to WordPress widget

Want your video in a sidebar or footer instead of the main page content? Well, that was easy. Just navigate to Interface> Utilities as we emphasize below.

Next, select the Text widget and select the widget area where you want to place your video. For illustration purposes, I went with the Blog Sidebar. Then, click the Add gadget button as below.

Add videos via text widget

Note, depending on the theme you are using, you may have many different widget areas.

Leave aside, set a title for your gadget (1), paste the YouTube video URL (2) and finally click the Save button (3) as shown below.

Now, let us see how our videos look on our test WordPress site using the Twenty Sixteen theme.

Not bad at all. Our sample website is complete with party videos!

Note when adding videos to WordPress

Adding videos to your WordPress site is fourth grade content. It's so easy that no previous coding or technical knowledge is required.

But if you notice - our guide recommends using a third-party service to host your videos. We generally recommend not uploading your video files directly to your WordPress site (unless there's a specific reason, such as premium videos or courses for members). Why? A few reasons:

  • If you're just getting started, chances are you're using a shared web hosting service, which comes with bandwidth and storage restrictions, though not limited to everything most hosts offer. . Hosting large files on a shared hosting environment can crash your site if your video has a lot of traffic.
  • Uploading videos directly to your WordPress site means you are missing out on all the traffic you can get from video streaming sites, e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, etc. and social media websites. Besides, the back links from such sites can also help you improve your search rankings, helping to move on to more traffic.
  • You make it harder for users to discover and share your videos, which limits how you can spread your video content. For example, when you host videos on YouTube, users can subscribe to your channel, like videos and share your content without doing extra work from you. In addition, they don't necessarily have to visit your website to share video content with friends, which will help you get your video in front of more eyeballs.
  • OH WAIT, you can also earn advertising revenue from your YouTube videos, so it really pays to create videos that tend to go viral. Looking at that, we have unearthed another stream of income for you

However this is only our opinion. You can of course upload videos to your media library for use on your website if you really want to. But we recommend making sure you have server resources for your videos available.

Adding videos to your WordPress site is as simple as A, B, C. You don't even need to install the plugin to get the video working for you! Just select a third party website (we prefer YouTube or Vimeo) and when you start creating videos, create high quality videos that can spread.
